Zendaya Hits Back: Not Being Black Enough to Play Aaliyah

The hoopla continues!!! Ever since it was revealed that Zendaya Coleman would be playing Aaliyah in the Lifetime Network's up and coming biopic about the singer the chit chat has been non stop. Aaliyah fans are now saying that the 17-year-old is quite simply not "black" enough to play the role.

Zendaya responded yesterday by saying :

A lot of people say I’m not black enough. Half black is just enough. It doesn’t matter what color you are, it’s about how you portray the character. For those that don’t know, Angela Bassett and Tina Turner, they look nothing alike but she was that character so I think that’s what it’s all about.”

Her father Kazembe Ajamu also chimed in :
And one thing, they’re shooting this in the summer spending lots of time in the sun. She’ll get dark enough.
Aaliyah's family had this to say about the decision to shoot a biopic about the late Aaliyah:

Stating that Lifetime Network have a habit of taking the lives of famous people and "exploiting them for a buck."
"Aaliyah was more than a singer, she was, and is still an American music icon whose legacy continues to live on and influence today's music culture. Just as Ray Charles, Notorious B.I.G, Selena, and Johnny Cash.
Okay, so it is pretty clear that the family quite simply do not want this film to be made. So this is the question, should Zendaya back out of the role?
